Squash court dimensions
A singles squash court is 9.75 m long and 6.40 m wide (about 32 × 21 ft). The out line on the front wall sits at 4.57 m, the service line at 1.78 m and the top of the tin at 0.48 m. Below is every line and clearance from the World Squash Federation (WSF) specification, in metres and in feet and inches, checked against England Squash and US Squash.
Singles court (international)
The WSF measures all wall heights from the finished floor to the underside of each line, except the tin, which is measured to its top. Length, width and diagonal are taken between the finished playing surfaces, 1 m above the floor. The same court is used for Squash 57 (formerly racketball).
| Measurement | Metric | Imperial |
|---|---|---|
| Length Between playing surfaces, ±10 mm, measured 1 m above the floor | 9.75 m | 31 ft 11⅞ in (US Squash: 32 ft) |
| Width ±10 mm, measured 1 m above the floor | 6.40 m | 21 ft |
| Diagonal ±20 mm | 11.665 m | 38 ft 3¼ in |

| Back wall line Floor to underside of the line | 2.13 m | 6 ft 11⅞ in (US Squash: 7 ft) |
| Side wall line Diagonal line joining the ends of the front wall line and back wall line | 4.57 m → 2.13 m | 15 ft → 7 ft |

Court diagrams
Doubles court (international)
The international (softball) doubles court has the same length, wall lines, short line, 1.60 m service boxes, 50 mm lines and 5.64 m clear height as a singles court. Only the width changes. For WSF world and regional events and the Commonwealth Games, the court is widened to 8.42 m and the tin lowered to 0.33 m. A doubles court is not suitable for singles unless it has a movable side wall that brings the width back to 6.40 m.
| Measurement | Metric | Imperial |
|---|---|---|
| Width (international doubles) | 7.62 m | 25 ft |
| Diagonal | 12.375 m | 40 ft 7¼ in |
| Width (international competition doubles) | 8.42 m | 27 ft 7½ in |
| Diagonal (competition width) | 12.883 m | 42 ft 3¼ in |
| Tin (competition width) | 0.33 m | 13 in |

US hardball doubles court
Hardball doubles, played mainly in North America, uses a much bigger court. Both the WSF (Appendix 3) and US Squash define it in feet and inches. For singles, US Squash states that it follows the WSF court specifications above.
| Measurement | Metric | Imperial |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 13.716 m | 45 ft |
| Width | 7.62 m | 25 ft |
| Front wall out line | 6.096 m | 20 ft |
| Side wall out line | 6.096 m, stepping to 4.572 m for the last 4.267 m | 20 ft for the first 31 ft, then 15 ft for the last 14 ft |
| Service line (to top of line) | 2.49 m | 8 ft 2 in |
| Tin (floor to top) | 0.432 m | 17 in |
| Back wall line | 2.134 m | 7 ft |
| Short line from back wall | 4.572 m | 15 ft |
| Service box | Quarter circle, 1.372 m radius | 4 ft 6 in radius |
| Minimum clear height | 7.315 m | 24 ft |
Sources: WSF Specifications for Squash Courts, Appendix 3; US Squash doubles courts page and hardball doubles drawing. Line widths differ: the WSF gives 38 mm (1½ in) for out lines and 25 mm (1 in) for other lines; the US Squash page says all lines are 1 in and red.
Ceiling, door, glass and walls
- Ceiling
- The 5.64 m clear height may fall gradually to 5.0 m (16 ft 4⅞ in) starting 1 m from the front wall, and to 4.0 m (13 ft 1½ in) starting 3 m from the back wall. Ceilings should be plain, matt and light-coloured, with no roof lights over the court.
- Door
- WSF: 750–900 mm wide by 2,130 mm high, opening into the court, flush with the wall inside, ideally in the centre of the back wall and in any case in its middle third. England Squash recommends a 915 mm solid-core door on new brick-built courts so wheelchair users can get in, or an 800 mm clear opening to meet UK Building Regulations.
- Glass back wall
- If the transparent back wall is only 2.13 m high, the back wall line is left off. If it is 2.18 m (7 ft 1⅞ in) or higher, the line is marked on the court side of the glass. England Squash notes that the supporting channels are set into the side walls and the glass fins sit on metal angles bolted into a thickened floor slab.
- Glass and all-glass courts
- Transparent walls must be safety glazing tested to the WSF player-impact load (a 100 kg body at 4.5 m/s); BS EN 12600 and ANSI Z97.1 are accepted where there is no national standard. Glass front and side walls must not reflect when seen from inside the court and should give one-way vision. On four-sided glass show courts in arenas, the ceiling reflectance rule does not apply.
- Tin profile
- The upper 50 mm of the tin may project no more than 15 mm into the court at the top and 45 mm at the bottom, and should deflect the ball. Below that, the tin must make a distinctive sound when hit. WSF recommends an adjustable tin (430–480 mm) where tournaments are likely.
- Walls
- Vertical to within ±5 mm over 2 m, straight to within ±15 mm along each wall, with no joints wider than 2 mm. Dimensions are to the finished playing surface, so allow for plaster or panel thickness in the structure.

Where the sources differ
- Tin height. The WSF standard is 480 mm. A 430 mm (17 in) tin is preferred for PSA professional events, and the US Squash singles drawing shows 17 in.
- Out line on the US Squash singles drawing. It is labelled 15 ft 7 in, while the WSF, the 2014 Rules appendix and England Squash all give 4,570 mm (15 ft). US Squash says it follows the WSF specification, so build to 4.57 m.
- Hardball service line. The WSF prints 2,464 mm beside “8 ft 2 in”, but 2,464 mm is 8 ft 1 in. The US Squash drawing explains it: 8 ft 1 in to the bottom of a 1 in line, 8 ft 2 in to the top.
- Hardball back wall. The WSF and the US Squash doubles page give 7 ft; the US Squash drawing labels 8 ft.
- Door width. The WSF allows 750–900 mm (1,000 mm for disabled access); England Squash recommends 915 mm for new UK courts.
